This poem was fitting as I reflect on our time spent home thus far grounded in our roots with family and friends.
My warrior husband would not miss the opportunity to teach his son about the roots of his brewing passion. Harvested our Northern Brewer hops today... it was a good day💙
"I planted us in the field together
so that our roots may entwine
and we may grow towards the same sky;
together in the spring, together
in the rain and wind of the winter months.
With all the troubles in this world
our life is simple, we have but to love one another.
So much confusion disappears
in the shade of this love.
So much empty space in my heart
is filled by you"
💙Andy has decided to make another WARRIOR decision today💙...He has chosen to move his battle of stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer from the hospital back to his home.💙
💙Within the hour, our WARRIOR, Andy, will travel by Trace Ambulance from Advocate Christ Medical Center to the comfort of his home in Mokena, Illinois, where he will continue his courageous fight against stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer with oral chemo medication.💙
💙💙💙Andy's heart is to continue fighting while being a family together in his home with hisWARRIOR wife-Meggan, his precious son-Andrew and his dog-Zeppelin. Having more time here on earth with his family is Andy's greatest request.💙💙💙
💙💙💙At this time, Meggan has taken an unpaid leave from work to be with Andy & baby Andrew. Andy, Meggan & Andrew are forever greatful for all of the continuing prayers, financial support, donations and words of encouragement from all of their fellow WARRIORS. All of you have a place in their hearts.💙💙💙
Hello Fellow Warriors,
💙💙💙 Just wanted to take the time to update everyone on Andy's progress and relay that Meggan and Andy wanted to again thank everyone for their support and prayers. They are forever greatful to all of you! 💙
This summer Andy was able to see Metallica and enjoy the lake house with baby Andrew. For these new memories, we are all very greatful!
As far as medically, we are in a bit of a tough place with his tumor response. After the first line of chemo not being effective for him, we did aggressive radiation. We learned a week ago from Andy's most recent pet scan that he did not respond, as hoped. Tumors on his liver and spleen have grown and unfortunately there is new mass in his mesentery. The primary site in his sigmoid is also giving us a hard time.
We ended up going to Northwestern this past Wednesday for a full second opinion. They agreed with everything our oncologist at Christ Hospital is doing.... to continue to push Andy's body as much as it can take with a different and pretty aggressive chemo.
This is all kind of shocking news but we are forging ahead and are continuing to work with our great team at Christ to keep Andy comfortable during the treatment. He is currently admitted into Christ Hospital due to intractable pain that we just could not safely manage at home. They started his new chemo treatment and Andy will be getting an intrathecal pain pump placed today.
We are asking for heavy prayers that Andy can get some relief with these interventions. He is such a true WARRIOR through all of this...💙💙💙
Andy has been home for a week now after almost a month long hospital stay...
Honestly, it has been rough as Andy, our WARRIOR, remains in a lot of debilitating pain. Currently, his pain is mostly from the ostomy site. He unfortunately has an infection on the side of his stoma (ostomy site) which we were previously hoping would heal with antibiotics...however, it did not completely heal due to the effects of chemo on the healing process. Because the infection is not clearing, Andy needs to undergo a revision surgery today. The goal of the surgery is to bring the stoma closer to the skin and remove the area that is infected.
Things look a little different at home as he has a urinary catheter, ostomy and has difficulty with mobility due to deconditioning and overall pain.
Some positives are that we think radiation has helped shrink his primary tumor as Andy's back pain is minimal compared to when he was admitted back in January. He remains on high doses of opioids (pain medicine) as it is just what he needs to maintain comfort right now.
Andy's chemo has been on hold for 2 weeks now because of the infection. Radiation continues Monday through Friday. He is on cycle 17/28. The hope is that the surgery today goes smoothly and he can restart chemo in another week.
In between Andy's immense fatigue and daily battle, he remains the WARRIOR he truly is...❤
Meggan prevails by Andy's side night and day, knowing in her heart of hearts that she needs to continue on her UNPAID leave from work to be with Andy and baby Andrew. Until things calm down and Andy is more functional and comfortable, they both will remain without their professional income...
The Mikal's send their great heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the prayers, words of encouragement, love and support!!! We are hoping Andy will be able to come home within this next week...❤❤❤
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!!
TODAY at Rock Bottom in Orland Park, Andy's brew, The Devil's Tears-a Belgian American Pale Ale, will be released! Stop on over, support our WARRIOR and enjoy a cold one or two! 🍻
